Portugal and Morocco this Friday expressed their commitment to the implementation of the New Mediterranean Agenda, highlighting the importance of relations with the European Union (EU) in the current regional geopolitical context.
This intention is expressed in the final declaration of the XIV Portuguese-Moroccan high-level meeting, which took place this Friday at the Foz Palace in Lisbon in the presence of the Prime Ministers of Portugal, António Costa and Morocco, Aziz Ahannouche. who led important ministerial delegations.
Having singled out the issue of migration as a main goal, both countries considered it necessary to discuss this issue at the Euro-Mediterranean Summit scheduled for the second half of this year, along with issues related to the strategic issues of EU relations and the Southern Neighborhood, such as: energy and green transition, digital technologies, environment and climate change, mobility, food and energy security, socio-economic development and investment.
The two countries reaffirm the strategic interest in the privileged partnership between Morocco and the EU, which they consider to be the “pillar of stability in the Mediterranean”, and stressed the importance of implementing various agreements and developing new types of relationships, with a focus on the Morocco/EU Green Partnership, signed on 18 October 2022.
The partnership aims to cooperate in the field of green energy, taking into account the goals of decarbonizing their economies, as well as the protection of natural resources, innovation, financing, research and development, education and training.
Within the framework of Euro-Mediterranean relations, the two countries call for strengthening the role and capacity of the Union for the Mediterranean as a privileged forum for dialogue and regional cooperation, inclusive of all the countries of the region, in accordance with all the principles that govern this partnership.
In addition, they highlighted the “added value” of the 5+5 Dialogue (five countries in southern Europe plus five in northern Africa) in various sectoral components “as a limited and pragmatic cooperation mechanism between the northern and southern banks”. Mediterranean Sea”.
As part of the multilateral cooperation supported by both countries, Portugal and Morocco have committed themselves to provide appropriate reinforcement within the UN and the specialized organizations of which they are members, through an enhanced dialogue between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs, with the aim of integrating the multilateral dimension into their bilateral dialogue.
In the final declaration, the two countries agreed to hold the XV high-level meeting in Morocco in accordance with the provisions of the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation, the date of which will be determined later.
