José Santos, 38, survived one of the biggest recent tragedies in the country: the Pedrogan Grande fire in June 2017. He is still experiencing post-traumatic stress. When he realizes he’s inside the fire, he says he feels the van’s tire burst, throwing him into the barrier.
“We ran 250 to 300 meters and felt our body on fire.”
This is the last memory before everything goes dark, everything goes dark.
He went through hell and returned to the world of the living. It took 52 days in a Coimbra hospital, 26 days in a coma and numerous consultations and plastic surgeries. Throughout this long period of recovery, Fidelidade, through the We Care Commitment program, was by his side in his physical and psychological rehabilitation.
José Santos thanks the “angel” who saved his life, a volunteer firefighter who showed up at the right time at the right time. During eight long months of recovery from severe burns to his body and face, friends and family provided him with strength and courage to continue the fight.
He says he knows that”if not for the support of Fidelidad in the following months, I would no longer have the chance to have this house and be here with my family. They were always present and always accompanied us in everything when we needed something.”
WeCare is a comprehensive life recovery support service for people affected by serious accidents at work, with its own office in Fidelidade. Accompanying the injured party is carried out on an individual basis as a result of the work of multidisciplinary teams with psychologists and social workers who have the technical skills to deal with major accidents.
