Five search and rescue dogs from the Lisbon Fire Regiment (RSB) were kept in a kennel in very poor conditions at the Chelas barracks until last Friday.
Following a complaint from the National Association of Professional Firefighters (ANBP) to cmthis fact was due to the lack of a decision to transfer the animals to a new nursery.
Fernando Curto, President of ANBP, explained cm that “the Chelas barracks last year began to expand to accommodate the command of the RSB.” “We have information that the kennel was ready for several months, but due to the lack of a decision by the Lisbon Council, the dogs remained in the old one,” he added.
This dead end, according to the leader of the association, began to have a physical effect on the animals. On photos and videos provided by ANBP cm, traces of blood are visible in the old kennel of the Chelas barracks. The space is still showing clear degradation. “In addition to paw injuries, aggressiveness is increasing in dogs. We know that they have already been stoned, which makes them attack people, ”complained Fernando Curto.
ANBP reports that on February 27 a meeting was already held with Lisbon Deputy Mayor and RSB Commander Thiago Lopes. “We said that an order from the city council is enough to replace the dogs,” the ANBP president stressed.
Due to the lack of conclusions from the meeting, ANBP requested a meeting with Mayor Carlos Moedas, but also says it has not received a response.
ABOUT cm on Friday contacted the mayor’s office of the capital to obtain an official position on this issue. On the same day, according to an official source cm“five dogs left the temporary kennel and went to Casa dos Animais de Lisboa to await final installation in the new kennel at the Chelas barracks.”
Fernando Curto does not agree with this decision. “In addition to increasing the response time if necessary, Casa dos Animais de Lisboa cannot accommodate these animals,” he concluded.
