The President of the Assembly of the Republic found it absurd this Monday to be asked about his possible preparations for a presidential campaign with the Portuguese communities in France, saying that a visit to Paris was within his competence.
“This seems like an absurd question. I am here to meet my French colleague, I am an MP elected by the emigration circle, so when I am outside the country I try to establish contact with the Portuguese,” he commented. Augusto Santos Silva, when asked if he was preparing a possible presidential campaign in Paris.
Santos Silva recalled that he was accompanied by “deputies from different parties”, and then commented: “If there is anything that is not discussed here, it is something that goes beyond the powers of the Assembly of the Republic.”
The President of the Portuguese Parliament is in Paris on a two-day official visit, having met Monday morning with President of the French National Assembly Yael Braun-Pivé and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo.
Augusto Santos Silva also met with selected members of the Portuguese community at the Portuguese Embassy in the French capital.
At a meeting with Yael Braun-Pivet, Santos Silva said that he touched on the topic of discipline in the semi-cycle, since recently in the French National Assembly, during the discussion of the reform of the pension system, there were several incidents from the extreme right and from the extreme left, in which the president had to impose himself in the face of screams , chants and other behavior on the part of deputies.
Another topic covered was the war in Ukraine, with Augusto Santos Silva saying that Volodymyr Zelensky’s presence in several European countries was “extremely important.”
“It is very important that Volodymyr Zelensky be able to increase the number of his trips to European capitals. […] Moreover, this is a demonstration of freedom for Ukrainians,” said the Chairman of the Assembly of the Republic, adding that after the visits, it only remained to come to Ukraine to the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza. .
Augusto Santos Silva will meet in Paris on Tuesday with President of the Senate Gerard Larcher and other representatives of the Portuguese community in France.
