Refugee drama inspired theater production

Three volunteers – Sean Binder, Sarah Mardini and Nassos Karakitsos – are on trial in Italy on charges of rescuing too many people in the Mediterranean.

The news surprised and angered Rodrigo Aleixo and the people with whom he works at the Teatro Gíria, and it was enough for him to gather a group of actors, including Manuela Couto and Barbara Branco, and put on a play about the drama of the refugees.

After choosing the cast, the text was commissioned from Miguel Graça. “This is an author with a political conscience and the aggressive sensibility needed to approach the subject,” he explains. cm directed by Rodrigo Aleixo who presents “Liberty” (“Livres”) at the Teatro Mirita Casimiro in Cascais.

“The play raises several questions,” he explains. “Including the fact that we are helping Ukrainians, and not Afghans, for example,” he adds.

Dariab Rasoli, Francisco Monteiro López, Joao Gaspar, Mario Coelho, Patricia Fonseca and Rivania Saraiva will also be on stage until the 28th.
