Carlos Alcaraz has joked that he is closing in on Rafael Nadal’s Grand Slam record after winning his first major title at the US Open.
In his first major final, Alcalaz defeated Caspar Rudi 6-4 2-6 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 at Flushing Meadows.
At just 19 years old, he is the youngest men’s Grand Slam champion since fellow Spaniard Nadal won the French Open in 2005.
He also replaced Daniil Medvedev as the first teenager in its 49-year history to top the ATP rankings.
“It’s been a dream since I was a kid to be the best in the world and a Grand Slam champion,” Alcaraz said after winning.
“This is something I’ve been working hard on. It’s very, very special.
“That’s crazy to me. I never thought I could do this at 19.”
The comparison between Alcaraz and Nadal is certainly inevitable, but there is still a long way to go before the new champion can challenge the 36-year-old’s all-time record 22 Grand Slam titles.
– Well, I have it. He’s 22. I’m on my way, Alcarazi added happily.
“Right now, I’m enjoying the moment. I am enjoying the cup in my hand.
“Of course I want to eat more. I want to be on top for weeks.”
“After this week, after these two great weeks, I will work hard again, I will fight to get more.
Nadal, who lost to Francis Tiafoe in the fourth round of the US Open, joyfully tweeted to his compatriots. I’m sure there are many more!
