On Saturday, a group of citizens from Seixal held a live cordon on the national road 10 (EN10) in defense of the construction of the second and third phases of the Sul do Tejo metro.
Paula Guimarães, the organizer of the initiative, explained to Luce that this is a way to draw attention to the need for this vehicle in the municipality of Seixal, in the district of Setúbal, fulfilling what has been planned for about 20 years. .
The Sul do Tejo metro currently serves the population of the municipality of Almada and the parish of Corroyos in the municipality of Seixal, but according to Paula Guimarães, it needs to be extended as planned between Corroyos and Fogueteiro (second phase) and Fogueteiro and Lavradio, municipality of Barreiro (third stage).
“Those who live in Seixal and work in Barreiro, for example, have enjoyed faster transport than currently, which can be reached in an hour and a half by public transport,” he said.
The cordon is to begin at 10:00 am and extend from the Cruz de Pau roundabout to Jardim do Fogueteiro, where residents, the head of the parish council of Amora and the mayor of Seixal will intervene.
In March, the Prime Minister announced the approval of a Council of Ministers resolution that will allow, among other things, the start of technical work on the next phases of the expansion of the Sul do Tejo metro and the implementation of projects for the construction of new connections between Barreiro and Montijo, as well as Barreiro and Seixal, a new river terminal in Moita and “Passeio do Arco Ribeirinho Sul”, a pedestrian bike path with a green structure that guarantees the connection between Almada and Alcochete.
At the time, the mayor of Seixal, Paulo Silva, expressed satisfaction with the government’s intention to continue expanding the Sul do Tejo metro, but stressed the importance of planning for the project’s execution.
“I am looking forward to the time horizon of this measure,” Paulo Silva said in a statement to the Lusa agency, believing that this measure is an important added value for the municipality’s public transport network and population mobility.
Highlighting the importance of moving the project forward, the mayor of Seixal also felt that “common sense has prevailed” as the announced extension will combine previously contracted sections that have been pending since 2003, i.e. between Corroyos and Fogueteiro and between Fogueteiro and Seixal.
The mayor was also pleased that the expansion included the construction of a bridge between Seixal and Barreiro, with a pedestrian and bike path, “as the Seixal always protected”.
