Bloc leader candidate Mariana Mortagua hopes the 13th party congress will be marked by “live and intense debate” and will respond to domestic critics for meddling in the main assembly.
“I think that today you will be able to see how strong the Eskerd Block is, how much it pleases all debates. Debates are starting,” the MP said in statements to journalists upon his arrival at the congress.
Mariana Mortagua also hopes that this major meeting will be marked by “joy, strength and controversy” as well as “enthusiasm for the future.”
“I am already very happy to be here, to meet comrades whom I have not seen for a long time, and very excited about the debate that we are going to start today. I think it will be a good congress,” she said. .
When asked about criticism of the opposite proposal, successor candidate Katharina Martins said she would like to reserve herself for debate at the convention and “for the first speech” she will make to the delegates to present her proposal early in the afternoon.
Mortagua pointed out that “all the debate that the militants consider important is held at the conventions”, emphasizing that BE loves “free debate”.
“I can’t foresee exactly how it will be, it will be what the Bloc activists want, but I can foresee that it will be good, that it will be intense and that it will be productive, and that we will definitely leave here stronger, which is the most important,” he stressed.
He stressed that the party has a “very tense inner life.”
“The internal democracy of the Bloc is what matters. This is when we meet to exchange views about our party, how we are going to organize our party in the future,” he defended, believing that the main thing is to have a place for “live and serious debate.”
The XIII BE National Assembly, which will elect the new leadership, will start this Saturday in Lisbon with a start dominated by the farewell speech of Katarina Martins, the presentation and discussion of the contested proposals and speeches of the delegates.
The 654 delegates will be able to choose between two proposals: A, led by MP Mariana Mortagua and many names from the current leadership, and E, which brings together critics and whose representative at the convention is former MP Pedro Soares.
