On Thursday, the GNR seized 16,084 kg of unfit for consumption fish from the Gafaña da Encarnação area, in the municipality of Ilhavo, in the Aveiro region, as announced this Saturday.

The military said in a statement that the operation was carried out by the Coastal Control Unit (UCC) through the Aveiro Coastal Control Unit.

The PRP states that inspection activities at this location were aimed at monitoring compliance with the rules for catching and unloading, transporting and packaging fresh and frozen fish.

The military inspected the truck and found inside “16,084 kg of frozen fish of various kinds, mislabeled and unsuitable for human consumption.”

During the operational-search activities, the driver of the vehicle, a man of 40 years old, was identified, a protocol on an administrative offense was drawn up against the transport company.

The company is subject to a maximum fine of €44,890 for “not being properly licensed and registered to work with animal by-products and for providing any guidance on monitoring by-products,” the statement said.

In the same note, the GNR recalls the conditions to be met by the collection, transport, storage, handling, processing, disposal, placing on the market, export and use of animal by-products and their derivatives, these topics being defined in special rules aimed at ” ensuring food safety and veterinary hygiene”.
