Joao Almeida becomes the first Portuguese on the final podium of the Italian race

Joao Almeida (Emirates UAE) will dedicate himself this Sunday as the first Portuguese to take the final podium in the Tour of Italy by bike in Rome, where Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jambo-Visma) will confirm the triumph in the 106th edition of the pink corsa.

This Sunday, the Giro peloton completes the 136 kilometers of the 21st and final stage, departing and arriving in Rome, next to the Colosseum, one day after the individual time trial podium finishes.

Roglic, three-time Tour of Spain champion (2019, 2020 and 2021), was the fastest on the 18.6 km “chrono climb” between Tarvisio and Monte Lussari, taking the pink jersey, leaving the previous leader, Britain’s Geraint Thomas (INEOS) in second place with a score of 40 seconds, while Almeida is in third place with a score of 42.

Overall, Roglic is 14 seconds ahead of Tomas and 1.15 seconds ahead of Almeida, who will win the youth classification.

The 24-year-old Portuguese will get his first Tour of Italy podium for Portugal and fourth in major tour history, as well as ending a “quick” finish in three major races since Joaquim Agostinho finished third on the Tour in 1979, a year later after doing the same in 1978 with a runner-up in the 1974 Tour of Spain.
