PS and PSD this Friday rejected bills to create an ombudsman for children who would operate specifically in the area of children and families, placing the burden on the ombudsman.
All three texts put to the vote in the Assembly of the Republic this Friday earned negative votes from socialists and social democrats after they expressed their unwillingness to create a new entity during the debate on Thursday.
The Liberal Initiative (IL) bill, which intends to create an ombudsman for children, received, in addition to yours, the votes of Chega, Bloco de Esquerda (BE), PAN and Livre, while the PCP abstained.
The BE text also failed, deserving only, in addition to yours, votes in favor of Chega, PAN and Livre. IL and PCP abstained.
Chega also faced the failure of her bill.
In 2019, the United Nations (UN) Children’s Rights Committee recommended that Portugal establish a mechanism to monitor children’s rights.
For its part, on February 14 this year, the Independent Commission for the Study of Child Abuse in the Catholic Church also requested the establishment of “an independent, autonomous organization, in cooperation with the Office of the Ombudsman and other structures deemed necessary, with specific action in the field of children and families.”
