The Setúbal court begins this Monday the trial of five people accused of being involved in the murder of a 3-year-old girl on June 20, 2022, allegedly due to the mother’s debt for witchcraft.
The victim, Jessica, died as a result of her abuse over the course of several days while she was cared for by the alleged nurse.
The mother, Ines Sanchez, is one of the defendants in the trial, charged with the offenses of aggravated murder and violations of qualified physical integrity, inactivity.
The victim’s alleged nurse Ana Pinto, her husband Justo Ribeiro Montes, and their daughter Esmeralda Pinto Montes are charged with qualified murder, kidnapping, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated coercion.
The three defendants, as well as Ana Pinto’s other son, Eduardo Montes, remain charged with aggravated rape and aggravated drug trafficking.
The prosecutor’s indictment states that he stayed at Ana Pinto’s house for five days as a guarantee to pay his mother’s debt of 200 euros for alleged witchcraft in order to improve Ines Sanchez’s relationship with her. partner, little Jessica was subjected to several episodes of abuse and was used as a drug courier.
The girl was returned to her mother only at about 10:00 on June 20, 2022, when she no longer responded to any stimuli.
Obvious signs of Jessica’s distress were ignored by her own mother for several hours, which, according to the investigation, may also have contributed to the child’s death, which occurred a few hours later at the São Bernardo hospital in Setúbal.
Jessica’s mother, after she was accused, requested that she be subjected to a psychiatric evaluation to confirm her possible reduced sanity, but the request was denied by the judge in the case.
The first court hearing is scheduled for today at 9:15 am in the court of Setúbal.
