The President of the Republic on Tuesday expressed his regret over the storm that hit the island of Madeira, and from South Africa expressed solidarity with those affected by the heavy rain.
“Let me say a few words of regret, regret and solidarity for what is happening in Madeira,” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa told reporters at the Parque da Liberdade in Pretoria.
Madeira Regional Government President Miguel Albuquerque is also in South Africa to attend the Portugal Day celebrations, which began on Monday in Cape Town and will continue on Wednesday in Pretoria and Johannesburg.
The head of state said that Miguel Albuquerque was “concerned about the prospect of a storm starting in Madeira.”
“And it actually started, and it got worse than expected. And I wanted to express my solidarity with those affected by the consequences of this storm, which we will see how it will develop if and when it arrives on the continent. and with what effects,” added Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.
The south coast and mountainous areas of Madeira Island have been under a red alert since 15:00 Monday due to heavy and incessant rain due to the passage of the Oscar Basin.
