The municipality of Funchal evicted 41 people from the residential complex due to structural problems in the building

Forty-one people living in the Canto do Muro residential complex in Funchal will be temporarily relocated to the Garrison Regiment No. 3 (RG3) due to “structural stability issues” of the building, the Chamber said on Wednesday. Municipal.

“This is a building that today presents some pathologies at the level of the pillars and therefore the Council, which cannot endanger the safety of people in any way, decided to temporarily relocate these families to RG3, which even today will enter,” says the civil protection adviser Bruno Pereira in an audio recording sent to the media.

The City Council Executive’s decision (PSD/CDS-PP) follows a joint review between the city’s technicians and the Regional Building Laboratory (LREC) this morning.

The “updated study” is based on a 2018 report that noted “problems with structural stability” of Block II of the Canto do Muro III residential complex, a social housing infrastructure managed by the Funchal City Council.

The instability of the building was exacerbated by bad weather, which affected the archipelago from Monday to Tuesday, as well as the passage of the Oscar Basin, due to which the southern coast and the mountainous regions of Madeira were placed under red danger for 24 hours.

“As part of this joint review, it was recommended that the Chamber proceed with the immediate eviction of families,” said Bruno Pereira, stressing that there are 14 families, for a total of 41 people.

“This is a situation that we regret, but the actions of the Chamber should always be aimed at ensuring security conditions,” he stressed.

Six families are already housed in RG3, a total of 18 people, due to a landslide in the upper areas of the parish of Santo António that occurred on Tuesday and put houses at risk.
