Tech giant Meta’s new Threads social network has registered 10 million subscribers in the first seven hours of being available, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has said.
“We just passed five million registrations in the first four hours,” Zuckerberg wrote in a post on his official Threads account (threads in Portuguese).
Meta, which owns the social networks Instagram and Facebook, as well as the mobile messaging and calling app WhatsApp, intends to overthrow Twitter with this new social network.
Threads was available in 100 countries as of 00:00 this Thursday, but not in EU countries and “smartphones” with the Android operating system.
Instagram chief Adam Mosseri lamented that Threads is currently not available in the EU, explaining that if Meta had to wait for Brussels approval, the launch would be delayed by many months.
Threads was originally scheduled to launch at 15:00 (Lisbon time) this Thursday, but the company has pushed it back to 12:00.
Celebrities who have joined the new social network include Colombian singer Shakira, British chef Gordon Ramsay and American actor Jack Black, according to Meta.
Entertainment and media giants such as Billboard magazine and The Hollywood Reporter, HBO television and the Netflix platform also have Threads accounts, as does US public radio National Public Radio (NPR).
In April, NPR announced it was ditching Twitter after tycoon Elon Musk’s Twitter called the radio’s main account “state-affiliated press” — a term also used to refer to controlled or heavily controlled media. and China.
On Tuesday, Elon Musk lashed out at Threads, saying the social network will collect all kinds of data from users, including identity, health and fitness, finances, location, purchases, contacts and “sensitive information.” Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey.
The Instagram-related app has an interface very similar to that of Twitter, but simpler: messages are grouped into two columns, “threads” and “replies”, and users can like, comment, share or forward messages.
The launch of Threads comes after Elon Musk announced on Saturday that it was limiting the number of Twitter messages that can be viewed per account and per day, a decision criticized by users and advertisers of the social network.
On Monday, Twitter also announced that the TweetDeck toolbar, very popular among its most active users, will soon be available only to paid accounts.
