Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court (STF) has threatened “immediate suspension of X’s activities” (formerly Twitter) in Brazil if the social network does not appoint a “legal representative” in the country within 24 hours.
The decision by STF judge Alexandre de Moraes, published on Wednesday, requires businessman Elon Musk, the owner of X, to appoint a representative of the social network to comply with court orders and pay outstanding fines.
Alexandre de Moraes is leading an investigation into the spread of fake news and, when he presided over the Supreme Electoral Court, ordered the removal of hundreds of posts on the social network X that questioned the reliability of Brazil’s electoral system in the period leading up to the 2022 elections.
