US funds construction of 4,100-student high school in Mozambique

The United States of America (USA) is funding the construction of a secondary school for 4,100 students, including displaced persons, in the city of Pemba, the provincial capital of Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique.

“We have officially begun building a secondary school that will provide access to education for 4,100 students a year,” said US Ambassador to Mozambique Peter Vrooman.

Vrooman spoke during the laying of the foundation stone for the construction of infrastructure in the Maringanya district in the city of Pemba.

“We aim to improve and strengthen the education sector in the province of Cabo Delgado and support the return of more Mozambican children to school,” he stressed.

The action is part of an effort to rebuild critical infrastructure destroyed as a result of armed violence perpetrated by armed groups in the province of Cabo Delgado since October 2017.

The future general education school will have 30 classrooms, four buildings, administrative and amenity premises.

“The Pemba area was one of the most hospitable [de pessoas deslocadas pela guerra]currently about 10,000 students are internally displaced,” said Minister of Education and Human Rights Carmelita Namashulua.

Namashulua said that two more high schools will be built in the province of Cabo Delgado this year, as part of a plan to build 27 high schools across the country.

“The economic and social plan for 2023 aims to build 27 secondary schools throughout our country,” the official stressed.

Carmelita Namasulua stressed that 104 schools were destroyed by armed groups in the province of Cabo Delgado.

For five years, the province has faced an armed insurgency, some of which have been claimed by the Islamic State extremist group.

The insurgency has led to retaliatory military action since July 2021 with the support of Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), who have liberated areas near the gas projects, but in the south of the region and in the neighboring region, Nampula province.

According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the conflict has already displaced one million people and killed about 4,000 people, according to the ACLED Conflict Registration Project.
