Five arrested in PSP operation to combat drug trafficking in Leiria region

Five people were arrested in a Public Security Police (PSP) operation to combat drug trafficking in the Leiria region as part of an investigation that resulted in the confiscation of drugs, money and weapons.

André Antunes, commander of the Leiria Criminal Investigation Squadron, explained to Lusa on Thursday that the operation carried out on Wednesday in Leiria, Marinha Grande, Mira de Aire and Fatima “was initiated after a two-year investigation of drug trafficking” .

“This investigation had a disparate methodology in the sense that there were several seizures in those two years as well as arrests,” he said, citing that they facilitated evidence-based support.

On Wednesday, six house searches and six other searches outside the home were carried out, and five people, four men and one woman, aged between 35 and 60, were arrested.

“The investigation found that during this period about 300 grams of cocaine (1500 doses), 250 doses of heroin, 520 doses of hashish, 100 grams of marijuana and 50 doses of MDMA were seized, as well as “firearms, and white, neutralizing gases and ammunition” said Commissioner Andre Ventura.

Also seized were two cars, “items related to drug trafficking, such as scales and chemical products for the processing of a drug product”, as well as more than two thousand euros in cash.

The unknown profession of the suspects “was engaged in reselling and direct selling to a consumer in the Leiria area,” the official explained, pointing out that some of them had already been arrested as part of this investigation and were subjected to non-custodial coercive measures, “without this did not prevent them from continuing this activity.”

Commissioner André Antunes noted that “some of the direct-to-consumer sales were in the form of housing and educational facilities, which created panic and a sense of insecurity in the community” and added that “this feeling was conveyed to the PSP through several citizens.”

Leiria’s PSP Criminal Investigation Squadron commander said he believed “with the culmination of this operation, peace of mind and public safety could be restored.”

The suspects will be present on Friday for the first judicial interrogation.
