The Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon transferred a pregnant at-risk woman diagnosed with controlled gestational diabetes to a private hospital on Wednesday, contrary to what was announced by the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Lisboa Norte (CHULN).
According to the Público newspaper that came out this Friday, the decision to transfer from Santa Maria Hospital to CUF Descobertas in Lisbon contradicts what was announced by the Hospital Center on Sunday and confirmed by the Minister of Health, who reiterated that “referrals, planned and temporary, were intended only for the mentioned low-risk pregnant women.”
Sources at Santa Maria Hospital told Público that the director of obstetrics has given an unwritten instruction to include women with controlled gestational diabetes on lists for transfer to private hospital wards.
When asked by the newspaper whether the criteria for clinical indications for transfers had been changed, the hospital replied that “for ethical and legal reasons, CHULN does not provide data on individual cases.”
“CHULN can only ensure that clinical and safety requirements are carefully reviewed and followed in all directions issued by private entities, and these decisions are made in close collaboration between physicians and participating institutions, as well as with the National Institute of Emergency Medicine,” said He. hospital.
According to Público, the CUF Descobertas hospital is accepting pregnant women referred by Santa Maria and on Tuesday morning another woman was already admitted with indications for induction of labor.
“This transfer (preceding the transfer of a pregnant woman with gestational diabetes) resulted in two obstetricians who were in an emergency contacting the service coordinator.
In a communication provided by the SIC, which Público had access to, the two physicians write: “We believe that the minimum best practice/clinical safety requirements are necessary for our emergency service to operate according to these principles with only two obstetricians.”
The newspaper reports that three doctors, two specialists and an admissions resident worked in the hospital that day.
In the message, Público reports, the two doctors say they understand the administration “cannot refuse to help the state” but “never jeopardizes best practices and leads to the transformation of a quality private hospital into another reality.”
In turn, the CUF Descobertas hospital told Público that “this report does not reflect, which does not reflect the clinical practice implemented in the maternity ward” of this hospital, emphasizing that it has “all the proper conditions for providing medical care in complete safety” . , therefore, it maintains its “accessibility and commitment to supporting public maternity hospitals in the regions of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley”.
