“He had a big heart”: Portuguese-American firefighter died in a fire on a cargo ship

The fire, which has been raging since Wednesday on an Italian cargo ship in the port of Newark, USA, has already killed two firefighters and injured five others. One of the victims is a Portuguese-American, Augusto Aqaba, 45, born in Torreira, in Mourtos (Aveiro). He and his colleague Wayne Brooks did not survive the flames on the “Great Costa d’Avorio”, where hundreds of cars were anchored. “Ogi”, as he was called, was found by his cousin between two burning cars.

“He had a big heart,” said his younger brother, Joao Acabu, while Captain Helder Fonseca recalls the man “always cheerful.” President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “is in solidarity with the pain of his family, friends and the Portuguese-American community, to whom he expresses his condolences,” the official note said.
