EasyJet said on Monday it has canceled nearly 2,000 flights from its Gatwick hub in London this summer due to difficulties, controller strikes and traffic-related delays.
The low-cost airline has canceled, more precisely, “1,700 flights that were due to be operated in July, August and September of this year”, which will affect about 180,000 passengers, the equivalent of “less than a day of flight”, because that “during the peak summer months, more than 90,000 flights,” said an EasyJet spokesman, quoted by Bloomberg financial agency.
In fact, airlines are canceling flights as a “preemptive measure” to limit the chaos in air travel, he adds.
In this sense, passengers whose flights are canceled will be transferred to other flights or may be reimbursed by the airlines.
Rapid flight adjustments will help reduce problems arising from airspace congestion due to the war in Ukraine and delays in air traffic control, the same spokesman said.
EasyJet is not the only airline that has had to cut its summer schedule.
Ryanair Holdings, Air France-KLM and Deutsche Lufthansa AG have canceled flights, citing air traffic congestion and controller strikes.
Aviation is growing as it recovers from the downturn caused by the covid-19 pandemic and July 6 was the busiest for commercial aviation worldwide, with 134,386 flights, according to flight tracking portal FlightRadar24.
