The UN estimates that 735 million people in the world suffer from the scourge of hunger.

Some 735 million people around the world are hungry, up 122 million from 2019, the United Nations (UN) said Wednesday in a new report that cites multiple crises, including the war in Ukraine, as the reason for the increase.

Findings are found in the 2023 edition of The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (known as SOFI), published this Wednesday jointly by five United Nations system agencies, which estimate that between 691 million and 783 million people have been affected by the disaster famine last year out of an average of 735 million people living in such a situation.

If this trend continues, the sustainable development goal of ending hunger by 2030 will not be reached, warned the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations Children’s Organization of the Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Program (WFP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are signatories of the report.
