The results of the first round of the national examinations for secondary education show improvements in almost half of the subjects, including Portuguese and biology, but a slight decrease in mathematics, physics and chemistry.
There were no negative average grades in final secondary tests, and grades rose significantly in 10 of the 25 subjects to be tested, according to National Jury of Examinations (JNE) data released this Monday by the Ministry of Education.
Compared to last year’s results, Portuguese is one of the subjects that stands out the most. Among the 35,065 students who took the exam, the average score was 12.5 points, which is higher than the 10.9 points recorded in 2021/2022.
In the most competitive subjects, biology and geology, where 38,617 tests were taken, the difference is negligible, but students also scored slightly higher than their peers scored last year, from 10.8 to 11.4.
However, Mathematics B showed the greatest growth, which a year ago was the only subject with a negative GPA. This year the average was fixed at 11.3 values.
On the other hand, there were five subjects in which the JNE recorded significant declines, and Math A is one of them. There were 33,749 tests, an average of 11.9 last year to 11.0 this year.
In Physics and Chemistry A, which was also one of the most visited, there was a slight decrease, but only by 0.5 points, from 11.7 to 11.2.
Compared to last year, the history of culture and the arts caused the greatest difficulties, where the average score fell by two points to 10.3.
This year, the examinations were held in 658 schools within the country and in schools abroad with a Portuguese curriculum, with 263,626 enrollments in the first stage of the national examinations and 208,646 tests passed.
Subjects with over 2,500 students again recorded the highest average in an English subject (14.8 points, the same as last year). The lowest score was Descriptive Geometry A, which was recorded at 9.7.
In all 25 subjects, Mandarin (Dedication) leads the table, with 24 students who took the test scoring an average of 17.1 points out of 20.
The test classification process involved 8,142 secondary school teachers, as well as 10,000 teachers who supervised the tests and members of school examination secretariats, JNE said in a statement.
“The assessment of the oral production and interaction component of the national foreign language exams included 11,420 assessments of the oral component in six national foreign language exams,” he adds, also referring to the 3,200 teachers who participated in the evaluation of the oral component.
The second stage of the national exams starts on Thursday and will last until July 26.
