Andre Ventura accuses Santos Silva of wanting to condition justice

The Chega leader this Monday accused the President of the Assembly of the Republic of wanting to condition justice after Augusto Santos Silva defended the explanations from the prosecutor’s office about the PSD searches.

“The President of the Assembly of the Republic referred to the living crime and the demand for explanations from the public ministry. We are embarking on the wrong path, a path in which politicians want to condition justice and want to ask for justice to be given to them or to be held accountable for their every step,” Andre Ventura said at a press conference at the party’s national headquarters in Lisbon.

He felt this was the wrong way to question the autonomy of the State Ministry and the Judicial Police, as well as the independence of the judiciary, stating that this may have been the “goal of the PS”.

Ventura said that he knew that “there are a number of judicial and police operations that PS would like to prevent or possibly stop or even erase” and that “other parties need to prevent this and know how to condemn it.” “.

The President of the Assembly of the Republic said this Monday that the Prosecutor’s Office should explain to the country about the searches at the house of Rui Rio and the headquarters of the Social Democratic Party, considering that there was a clear violation of the secrecy of justice, since they were transmitted directly by the television company and under what conditions they took place.

“The conditions under which court-ordered searches were carried out at the headquarters of a political party and the contours of this issue are important enough that I intend to take this issue to the next leadership conference,” Santos Silva told reporters in Guimarães, Braga district.

André Ventura argued that justice should be held accountable in a democracy, but not when politicians want to or feel affected.

On Wednesday, the judicial police mobilized about 100 inspectors, computer and financial experts for a series of 20 searches, including the home of former PSD President Rui Rio and the party’s national headquarters, as part of an investigation by the Investigation Department. Lisbon Regional Criminal Action (DIAP) on suspicion of embezzlement and abuse of power.

This is about the alleged misuse of funds for parliamentary group offices with staff working for the party outside parliament.
