Child and pediatric health specialist Mario Andre Macedo announced this Saturday his candidacy to chair the Ordem dos Enfermeiros, a position held by Ana Rita Cavaco who was prevented from running again due to reaching a deadline.
The announcement of the candidacy of Nurse Mario Andre Macedo in Leiria comes two months after one of the vice-presidents of the Order, Luis Filipe Barreira, announced his candidacy in the November elections.
Mario Andre Macedo, 39, is the main face of the Movimento Enfermeiros Unidos, which this Saturday is promoting the meeting in Leiria between nurses of different specialties and has announced his candidacy in a statement.
In a nomination speech cited in the statement, a nurse working in the pediatric emergency department at Amadora Sintra Hospital asked for changes, deeming it “unthinkable that the largest professional medical group has no say in sector policy.”
According to a candidate for chair of the Order of Nurses, “Nursing is still seen as an expense, not an investment, as a way to improve access to quality health care.”
In accordance with the Statute of the Order of Nurses, created in 1998, the holders and members of the bodies are elected for a term of four years and cannot serve more than two consecutive mandates.
The current chairman, Ana Rita Cavaco, first took office on 30 January 2016 and was re-elected in 2019.
