Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Monday that the Malian army and gunmen suspected of being Wagner Group mercenaries carried out new summary executions, looting, disappearances and other violations in the African country.
According to the US news agency AP, this non-governmental organization (NGO) said that atrocities were committed in the central region of Mali and that since December 2022, several dozen citizens have been summarily executed or simply disappeared. This claim is based on more than 40 telephone interviews, including with witnesses, and a video “which shows evidence of abuses committed by Malian soldiers and foreign fighters.”
Those violations, adds the HWR report cited by the AP, include the death of at least 20 civilians, including a woman and a six-year-old girl, during an operation in the Mopti region by “many Malians and ‘white’ foreign soldiers.”
