China on Tuesday appointed Wang Yi as its new foreign minister, replacing Qin Gang, who resigned after a month-long absence, state media reported. Reuters.
Qin Gang, 57, became one of the country’s youngest foreign ministers when he took office in December after serving as envoy to the United States. He has not appeared in public since June 25.
After missing an international diplomatic summit in Indonesia, the foreign ministry said that Qin was absent from the post for unspecified health reasons, but the lack of specific information has fueled controversy surrounding the Chinese politician.
Wang, 69, who replaced Qin during his absence, is resuming the job he held from 2018 to 2022.
The move comes amid a wave of international commitments and diplomatic issues with the United States, which Beijing says are at their lowest since the relationship was established.
The world’s two largest economies disagree on some issues, including Ukraine, the close relationship between Beijing and Moscow, trade and technology disputes, and Taiwan, an autonomous island China claims as its own.
