Authorities announced that a group of 46 people had been rescued from a canoe drifting off Cape Verde, but six people died before arriving on Sal Island on Tuesday after they were picked up by a Spanish fishing boat.
The deaths are linked to the poor health the group was found in, especially the problem of dehydration, Radio de Cabo Verde on Sal Island reported.
However, according to testimony gathered by the authorities, there were originally to be 101 people in the pie, all from Senegal but one from Guinea-Bissau.
Earlier this Friday, the bodies of the fishing boat were collected and the survivors were sheltered in makeshift tents on Palmeira Pier.
Vessels often moor to the coast of the Cape Verde Islands.
The most recent incident occurred in January, when a pirogue arrived on the island of Boa Vista with 90 African migrants on board, two of whom have already died.
At the time, Cape Verdean President José María Neves demanded that conditions be created to prevent the arrival of migrants and to monitor them.
Earlier, in November 2022, Cape Verde and Senegal expressed their willingness to strengthen cooperation and work together with other African states to combat illegal immigration, days after a ship carrying 66 Senegalese immigrants washed ashore on the island of Sal.
