The Portuguese Armed Forces will train 19 Cape Verdean soldiers for two months to reach the rank of senior sergeant and then integrate them into international missions, it was announced on Wednesday.
“This course aims to develop the necessary skills to enable graduates to perform roles in all functional areas of the Armed Forces’ command and services, compatible with the position of senior sergeant,” said the Chief of Staff of the Cape Verdean Armed Forces, António Duarte Monteiro, in Praia at the opening of the training.
From this Wednesday, August 7, to October 4, 19 soldiers from the National and Coast Guards, as well as other commands and services, will take part in this training, conducted by Portuguese instructors, which will include five modules, namely: law and military legislation, defense and international relations, military leadership and leadership, world history and solving “complex problems”.
This initiative is part of the military-technical cooperation programme between Portugal and Cape Verde for 2021-2026, which aims to provide graduates with leadership, resource management and technical skills.
“We have enjoyed the support of military-technical cooperation, which, within the framework of such events, gives an international scale to our military training system, increasing the quality and prestige of our Armed Forces, ensuring the training of our servicemen to join the ranks of international missions,” he noted.
The Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces called on the cadets to study hard in order to gain the necessary knowledge to carry out their duties and better serve the nation of Cape Verde.
For his part, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Portuguese Embassy in Cape Verde, Nuno Felix, stressed that the world is subject to risks and threats that go “far beyond” traditional military conflicts and extend to areas such as terrorism, human trafficking and “Cape Verde, being a young country, is an example of a democracy that develops thanks to the commitment of its people.”
“The Armed Forces play a very important role in protecting this same state, this same society. I am sure that this course will be difficult, because the challenges that the Armed Forces face also require efforts, but in the end we will all come out enriched. Thanks to this experience, we will be able to look to the future with renewed capabilities and confidence,” he said.
Nuno Felix also assured that Portugal “will always be available as a brotherly country” in terms of cooperation in the field of defense, to cooperate wherever and whenever the Cape Verdean authorities deem it appropriate and necessary for the consolidation of Cape Verdean institutions.
