Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the success of Sunday’s “pre-emptive strike” against Hezbollah but warned that “the story does not end here,” implying that Israel could take new military action to counter the border threat and allow tens of thousands of Israeli civilians to return home.
The head of the Israeli government did not specify what other actions Israel might take, but suggested that the goal is to “change the situation in the North.” At the same time, the Israeli government spokesman indicated that the current situation in the north of the country “is not sustainable.” “Israel will fulfill its duty and allow the population to return,” David Menser emphasized.
Early Sunday morning, Israel launched a “preemptive strike” on Hezbollah rocket and launch sites in southern Lebanon, destroying “thousands of rockets” and other projectiles after intelligence that the Shiite movement was preparing to launch a large-scale attack on Lebanon and northern Israel. The attack was eventually launched, but Israeli defenses shot down nearly all of the roughly 300 rockets and drones fired by Hezbollah, with the rest landing in isolated areas.
According to an Israeli spokesman, the preemptive attack “destabilized Hezbollah and led to the failure of the operation.” “The enemy planned to launch many hundreds of rockets at our communities in the north, but our preemptive action resulted in more than half or perhaps two-thirds of these shells being destroyed,” Daniel Hagari said, assuring that Israel does not intend an open confrontation with Hezbollah and that the goal is to reduce tensions in the north through negotiations. “But if necessary, we are ready for war,” he warned.
THE TARGET WAS MOSSAD HEADQUARTERS
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said the main target of the Shiite movement’s missiles and drones was an “intelligence base” on the outskirts of Tel Aviv, apparently referring to the Glilot military base, the headquarters of the Mossad and Israel’s military information services. Nasrallah said the attack, which was intended to avenge the death of commander Fuad Shukr, “was a success.”
AT LEAST FOUR DEAD
At least two Hezbollah fighters and a member of an allied group have been killed in Israeli attacks on the group’s positions in southern Lebanon. An Israeli navy soldier was also killed and two others were wounded when the vessel they were on was hit by debris from an Iron Dome interceptor missile.
