Avenida da Liberdade tunnel in Braga closed for 250 days from Monday

Vehicle traffic through the Avenida da Liberdade tunnel in Braga will be closed, with some exceptions, from Monday and for a period of 250 days to carry out requalification works, the municipality announced this Thursday.

The municipality said in a statement that the tunnel will be closed to traffic at the Campo da Viña and Avenida Antonio Macedo entrances, only road traffic through the Avenida Central entrance and indirect car entrances will continue. a park on Avenida Central and a car park at the Liberdade Street Fashion Mall.

The exit from the Campo da Viña car park to Avenida António Macedo will remain open, except during the period of work on this road.

The requalification of the tunnel cost 5.2 million euros.

According to the municipality, the intervention is aimed at replacing the coatings on the side walls and improving the safety and comfort of tunnel users through the installation or comprehensive replacement of a set of infrastructures.

This 1.15 km road tunnel provides one of the main entrances to Braga, from the Northern ring road (Avenida Antonio Macedo) and the city center (Avenida da Liberdade), and has two other entrances located on Conde street from Agrolongo. and Avenida Central.

Opened in 1997 and extended in 2009 to a length of 300 meters, the tunnel has, according to the Chamber, “never been subjected to any major intervention” but only the target of “minor conservation and maintenance interventions”.

Through the intervention that will now take place, the Chamber intends to “not only restore but also modernize the tunnel by requalifying the storm sewer network, repairing the roadways, and replacing wall and wall coverings and pavement.” electrical infrastructures.

The ventilation and smoke removal systems, security and fire alarms and the public lighting network will also be replaced.

The fire network will also be upgraded.

The retraining also includes the installation of a video surveillance network and the installation of a traffic control and counting system.
