Biden opens ‘new chapter’ with Japan and South Korea at strategic summit

US President Joe Biden hosts South Korean counterpart Yun Suk-yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Friday at a strategic summit seen as a “new chapter” in strengthening the trilateral relationship.

Camp David, the US presidential retreat in Maryland, which holds a special place in the US diplomatic tradition, will be a meeting place for three leaders with common interests, such as China, North Korea, the North and Russia.

Joe Biden’s chief executive has sought closer economic and defense ties with South Korea and Japan, balancing them with China’s territorial ambitions and assertive economic influence, and seeking the cooperation of both Asian partners in supporting Ukraine against a Russian invasion.
