A bacterial infection that killed a young pilgrim is mistaken for influenza in Marinha Grande.

Luca Re Sartu, a 24-year-old Italian who died after contracting a bacterial infection during World Youth Day, was treated at the Marinha Grande municipality health center, where he was diagnosed with the flu and prescribed paracetamol.

According to “Corriere della Sera”, a friend of Luca, who was born in the Varese region and was part of a group of 35 young people, he was in the camp in San Pedro de Moel after the WYD, which took place from August 1 to 6, Luca had a high temperature. He went to the medical center, where he was told that these were flu symptoms. In a conversation with his mother, Luca said that he was prescribed paracetamol.

Upon arrival at Bergamo Airport (Italy) on the 9th, he suffered a cardiac arrest and was hospitalized. He died on 11. The result of the autopsy confirmed the diagnosis of Italian doctors: Luca died of a bacterial infection.

The funeral took place on Friday, and during the memorial service Luca’s father Raimondi revealed that Pope Francis had personally called Luca’s mother – the young man was a catechist in the Marnate parish – to “comfort” her.
