The PSD president said on Tuesday that Portugal was in a “fiscal choke” and asked the prime minister if he was ready to “cut taxes now” or if he would wait for the presentation of the state budget in PowerPoint.
Visiting the Bragança area on the Sentir Portugal route, speaking in the municipality of Mirandela, Luis Montenegro stated that there are now provisions for tax breaks and accused António Costa of being “the tax record holder in Portugal”.
“Portugal today has a fiscal suffocation for people, families, companies, which has consequences (…). We have taxes in Portugal that should be reduced now. The government today has a surplus in tax revenues, given that there was already a lot, it was a record that was provided for in the budget,” said Luis Montenegro.
According to the social democratic leader, “there are conditions for lowering taxes for the middle class, there are conditions for young people under 35 to pay a third of the tax rate they pay today, there are conditions for those who are more productive to be able to get a return on this job, this merit, without paying taxes or deductions for performance bonuses.”
Therefore, Luis Montenegro challenged Prime Minister António Costa, to whom he also left the accusations: “Let’s be frank. There are conditions for lowering the IRS this year, 2023. He is not waiting for the state budget (OE) to come and make flowers with OE’s “PowerPoint”, it is now, there is already a surplus this year. Dr. António Costa should answer the question, should the IRS be lowered this year?” he said.
“Dr. António Costa and PS want to do it now or they will wait for OE’s PowerPoint to show the flower to try and sell the country something that will not be fulfilled later,” he asked.
Montenegro said that “the government has been available to cut taxes for eight years because it has been running the country for eight years”, but, he emphasized, “only accessibility is one thing, conversation is one thing, PowerPoints are what represents themselves.”
“Another thing is that Portugal breaks records every year. The tax record holder in Portugal has a face, it’s António Costa. The record holder for taxes in Portugal has a party abbreviation, this is PS. minimum wage or just above the minimum wage, which levels the country,” he accused.
