The Vila Meã Fire Corps were about to replace a team fighting a fire in Baiao on Tuesday afternoon when the car they were traveling in plunged into a ravine. Four operators were injured, one of them seriously, after the all-terrain vehicle rolled over several times in a ravine about 200 meters deep.
The accident occurred around 13:40 while extinguishing a fire that raged in Teixeira and Teixeiro in Bayau. The victims were treated on the spot by INEM teams and firefighters, who were taken to the hospital.
Sergio Barros, head of the Tamega e Souza sub-regional emergency and civil protection department, said the four firefighters injured in the accident were in a “stable” condition at the time of the rescue. As Sergio Barros explained, a car with five firefighters “ran into a ravine” during the maneuver. The age of the firefighters in the car was from 25 to 46 years old, three of them received minor injuries. One of the victims was regarded as serious, but his clinical condition is stable, like that of the other three.

In the village of Areias in Carraceda de Anciaes, where a fire broke out on Monday afternoon, the population has become accustomed to the proximity of fires at this time of year. At night they saw flames very close to their homes. Ricardo Costa, a villager, told cm that on Tuesday evening all the villagers were frightened and went out into the street. “The fire was close, but nothing threatened the houses, firefighters arrived quickly and took control of the situation. There were even people from the village who helped the firefighters get the tractors out, open the wheels, clear the paths and prevent the fire from spreading,” he said.
