Some survivors of the Iraq wedding fire are now identifying family members killed in the tragedy. They describe the whole situation as “painful” and hellish.
Grieving family members gathered outside a mortuary in the nearby city of Mosul to identify the bodies.
“It wasn’t a wedding. It was hell.” These are the words of Mariam Khedr, one of the guests at the wedding that left 114 people dead and more than 200 injured. As a result of the tragedy, the woman lost her 27-year-old daughter and eight-month-old grandson, Reuters reports.
Youssef, a man outside the morgue with his face and hands burned, told Reuters that he and his three-year-old grandson survived. His wife died in the fire because she fell when the guests ran in panic to escape the fire.
Another woman still stood in tears at the entrance to the morgue, having lost her family in the fire. “I lost my daughter, my husband and my three-year-old son. They all burned out. My heart is on fire,” he said.
Another survivor was filmed grabbing a burnt dress and shouting: “Mom! Mother! These are mom’s! Mother!”
“Where is my mother?” – he asked.
According to Reuters, the man’s mother hit her head as she ran out of the party hall and was ultimately unable to escape.
Fireworks from the ceremony caused a fire that broke out in the ceremony hall. It all starts about an hour after the event starts. Relief operations are still ongoing and an investigation has been launched to establish the full facts.
