The President of the Republic said this Wednesday that he is in Kyiv to continue the Portuguese presence and show solidarity with Ukraine, as well as to take part in the celebration of Independence Day on Thursday.
“The goal is multiple. First, it is the continuation of the Portuguese presence. Prime Minister, President of the Assembly of the Republic, Minister of Foreign Affairs several times, now the President of the Republic has arrived. Show your solidarity in all domains,” Marcelo Rebelo de Souza said shortly after disembarking at the Kyiv-Pasazhyrsky railway station.
The head of state added that “everything that is fundamental – and everything fundamental at the moment – in the life of Ukraine is also fundamental in the life of Portugal.”
Accompanied by Foreign Minister João Gomes Cravinho, the President of the Republic announced that on Thursday he would take part in the celebration of the 32nd anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, given that “this year is even more special” because representatives of other countries join the celebrations and why the Ukrainian counteroffensive is taking place , “the assertion of its sovereignty.”
