Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and current deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, has hinted at the possibility that the breakaway regions of Georgia, South Ossetia and Abkhazia could be the next target for conquest.
“The idea of joining Russia is still popular in Abkhazia and South Ossetia,” Medvedev wrote in an article published by a Russian newspaper. Arguments and Facts, quotes Reuters.
“It is quite possible that it will be implemented if there are good reasons for this,” he added.
Georgia lost control of both regions after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Moscow recognized its independence in 2008 after Georgia’s attempt to regain control of South Ossetia by force, which led to a Russian counterattack.
In accordance with ReutersAlthough Russia’s relations with Georgia have since improved, Medvedev has accused the West of creating tension across the country by discussing its possible entry into NATO.
“We will not wait until our fears are close to reality,” Medvedev said in an article marking the 15th anniversary of recognition of independence, referring to a possible annexation.
Georgian officials have repeatedly said they are determined to join a US-led military alliance that will preserve the country’s territorial integrity.
Last September, Russia announced the annexation of four Ukrainian regions: Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye, but none of the annexations received international recognition.
