The Maritime Police announced this Saturday that on Friday they had rescued 47 migrants who were on two boats in the Mediterranean off the island of Pantelleria in Italy.
The rescue operation, carried out by members of the Maritime Police on a mission in Italy, as part of FRONTEX’s Operation THEMIS, came after an alert received through the local Palermo coordination center of the existence of two boats carrying migrants on board.
The Portuguese authorities added in a statement that “marine police units immediately went to the place where they intercepted the ships, which were in total 47 people, including 26 men, three women and 18 minors, including three children on their laps.” who were not wearing life jackets.
