Mozambique’s three main parties (Frelimo, Renamo and MDM) are at the top of the ballot in October’s municipal elections, the National Electoral Commission (CNE) announced in a draw held on Tuesday in Maputo.
The Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), the third parliamentary party, is in first position, the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), which is in power, is in second, and the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the largest opposition force, is in second position. Thirdly, said after the draw, Alberto Sabi, Deputy Coordinator of the CNE Commission for Legal and Ethical Affairs.
More than 11,500 candidates from 10 political parties, three coalitions of parties and eight citizen groups were admitted by the CNE to the October 11 municipal elections.
The electoral body also held another draw to “determine the distribution of air time” for competitors during the election campaign, which will run from September 26 to October 8.
More than 8.7 million Mozambican voters are registered to vote in the sixth municipal elections, according to CNE, lower than the original forecast of 9.8 million voters.
Mozambican voters will elect 65 new mayors, including 12 new municipalities that will join the existing 53.
In the 2018 municipal elections, Frelimo won 44 out of 53 municipalities, while the opposition won only nine: Renamo with eight, and MDM, the third party, with one.
