Interior of Lagoa de Albufeira declared unsuitable for swimming

The water in the bathing area in the inner lagoa de Albufeira in the municipality of Sesimbra has been declared unsuitable for bathing based on an analysis by the Portuguese Environmental Protection Agency (APA), the municipality said on Wednesday.

In the information published on its page, the city council of Sesimbra explains that the analysis was carried out on this Wednesday, as well as a counter-analysis, as indicated in the legal procedures, the results of which will be known on Friday.

On September 6, according to the Chamber, new tests will be carried out in the hope that normal life can be restored in the coming days.

Inner Lagoa has been a bathing area since 2017, and water control began in 2016.

The city council of Sesimbra says that since it was classified as a bathing area, the tests came back negative for the first time.

“All previous results have shown that the water is of excellent quality for bathing,” the municipality said, adding that technicians are on site trying to find the reason for this change in performance.

The Chamber of Sesimbra adds that the lagoon is open to the sea and that the tides favor the renewal of the waters, so everything indicates that this was a one-time situation and possibly accidental.

There are two swimming areas in Lagoa de Albufeira: Lagoa Mar, considered the entire beach on the west coast, and Inner Lagoa.

These analyzes do not cover Lagoa Mar, giving the municipality confidence that it continues to maintain excellent water quality and is awarded the Blue Flag.
