Tourist ship with more than a dozen crew members stuck in Benagil Cave.
The incident happened on a Saturday afternoon, during one of the usual commercial trips to the cave. The maritime authorities received a warning and sent two vessels to the scene, which later discovered the vessel was already on its way. It was launched with the support of other tourist boats in the area.
The episode took place around 3:00 pm and lasted about 20 minutes. Despite the panic, there were no casualties.
It was with the aim of “guaranteeing the safety of these visitors and these activities” that Portimao Port Captain Eduardo Pousadas Godinho issued a decree banning the activity of visiting the caves located in the area of jurisdiction of this captaincy, between Praia do Vale da Lapa and Fontañas beach.
The measure will be in effect for 48 hours, starting at 8 am today. At stake is the “expected deterioration of weather conditions”: wind speeds can reach 20 knots, about 37 kilometers per hour, and wind heights can reach two meters.
