The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) this Monday increased the number of areas under a yellow warning from three to seven due to the forecast for occasional heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, hail and gusts of wind.
Previously, IPMA placed the areas of Porto, Viana do Castelo and Braga under a yellow alert from 21:00 Monday to 06:00 Tuesday.
In a new statement, the institute has extended a yellow warning to the districts of Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro and Coimbra due to the forecast for occasional heavy rainfall, which can occasionally be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, especially in the coastal part of the districts. .
The warning for these four counties began at 10:29 am and will end at 6:00 pm on Monday.
According to IPMA, a yellow alert is issued whenever a weather-dependent risk situation arises for certain activities.
The weather forecast prompted the National Emergency Management and Civil Protection Administration (ANEPC) to call on the public to take preventive action.
According to the ANEPC, typical transition season episodes with the first rains contribute to “the occurrence of urban flooding caused by the accumulation of rainwater due to clogged drainage systems.”
Civil Protection also warned of the possibility of “floods caused by the flooding of the course of certain watercourses, rivers and streams”, as well as landslides and landslides “motivated by water infiltration, a phenomenon that can be exacerbated.” by removal of vegetation cover by rural fires or by artificial tillage.”
ANEPC also called for extra care when moving and staying near forested areas, paying attention to the possibility of falling branches and trees due to strong winds.
