Turkey launches international operation to rescue American from cave

An international rescue operation is underway in Turkey to rescue an American explorer stuck in a 1,000-meter-deep cave.

In accordance with ReutersMark Dickey, 40, was on an international research mission in Morca Cave in southern Turkey when he suffered gastrointestinal bleeding.

Several international teams come to the rescue, including Croatians and Italians. According to the director of the Turkish Speleology Federation (TUMAF), the mark “has a depth of about 1000 meters, and the ascent is divided into seven sections.”

Rescue operations are expected to take 10 days, but this period could be shorter if Dicky’s condition improves, or even longer if he gets worse. According to the TUMAF director, the caver’s condition has improved, and now he can stand on his own.

According to TUMAF, a telephone line was laid, the depth of which reaches 1040 meters. The federation also reported that rescuers in Croatia are installing a backup communication system.

The cave in which Diki is locked is the third largest in Turkey, its height is 2140 meters.
