The Porto council has provided 10 search and rescue units in destroyed structures (BREC) and four municipal kinesthetic teams to join Morocco’s national relief contingent, the municipality’s president told Lusa news agency.
“With the tragedy that occurred in Morocco and the availability of resources that could be helpful on the ground, we could not help but contribute. I contacted the Minister of the Interior and the head of the national civil protection service and demonstrated our readiness to contribute, human and technical resources,” Rui Moreira said in an interview with Lusa.
According to the mayor, the Municipal Civil Protection Service of Porto provided 10 members of the BREC team and four members of the film technical unit (two from the Sapadores fire regiment and two from the municipal police) with a 10-hour alert level.
“It only makes sense if they take the field now. Help is needed now,” emphasized Rui Moreira.
The earthquake struck Morocco on Friday evening, killing more than a thousand people and injuring 1,200, and causing widespread damage to the Marrakesh region, an important Moroccan tourist destination.
The earthquake, whose epicenter was recorded in the city of Isis, 63 kilometers southwest of the city of Marrakesh, was felt in Portugal and Spain, reaching a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale, according to the National Institute of Geophysics of Marrakech. .
The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the earthquake’s magnitude as 6.8.
