Seven streets in the historic center of Vila Nova de Cerveira will be closed to traffic on weekends after a three-month trial period in the summer, the Viana do Castelo district municipality announced this Friday.
In a statement, the municipality clarified that the ban on car traffic on Saturdays and Sundays applies to Rua António José Duro, Terreiro and Liberdade Square to the intersection of Rua do Cais and Rua Queiroz Ribeiro (from Rua do Arrabalde to the square Praça da Liberdade). , as well as Cesar Maldonado, Costa Brava and Costa Pereira streets.
This measure “excludes residents, economic activities, municipal solid waste collection, civil protection agents, taxis and municipal transport,” the chamber explains.
In these cases, street closures must be “enforced once the gates/flowers have passed.”
Loading and unloading “are guaranteed by the proposal for permanent locations in Plaza Alto Minho, Rua 25 de Abril and Plaza 16 de Fevereiro.”
The municipality said it had also provided for a “temporary ban on the movement of cars along Rua António José Duro, Terreiro and Plaza Liberdade until the Rua do Cais intersection, during “weddings, baptisms, funerals or other events of a religious nature.” in the main church.
In this way, the municipality intends to “achieve more sustainable mobility, contributing to the reduction of environmental pollution both in terms of emissions and noise, promoting pedestrian movement and the true enjoyment of public space.”
“For almost three summer months, residents and visitors of the municipality of Vila Nova de Cerveira were able to enjoy an attractive and varied cultural program in a safe environment, guaranteed by the ban on cars on the main arteries of the historical center,” the chamber points out, justifying the decision to continue the measure.
According to the municipality, the historic center of Vila Nova de Cerveira is “relatively small in size” with a “very significant concentration of commercial and tourist facilities.”
“Between July and September, the main arteries were brought back to the people by vehicular traffic, and families and groups of tourists were visible enjoying not only the events but the sights without the worry of constant vigilance for vehicular traffic,” he says.
