Five defendants in the second case of the death of Ukrainian Igor Gomenyuk in the Border Guard (SEF) building in Lisbon will stand trial on the exact terms of the charge, a criminal judge decided this Friday. Security guard Manuel Correia and former border director Antonio Sergio Enriquez will demand a decision.
Judge Karina Santos found that Manuel Correia, as the prosecution alleges, helped bind Gomeniuk’s legs and arms with tape in the room where he died. He is accused of crimes related to the illegal implementation of private security activities in apparent competition with kidnapping.
Antonio Sergio Enriquez was seen on CCTV in the room where the victim died and changed the incident report with the intention, the judge said, of favoring the three inspectors responsible for the Ukrainian’s death. He is accused of denial of justice and malfeasance.
Igor Gomenyuk died in 2020 from slow suffocation after attacks with legs and sticks by inspectors Luis Silva, Duarte Laja and Bruno Souza. The Ukrainian citizen suffered eight broken ribs and remained handcuffed with his hands behind his back, face down, experiencing breathing difficulties for a long time, which led to cardiopulmonary arrest.
The three inspectors reported to Evora prison in August to serve out their remaining nearly six years after being under house arrest since 2020.
