More than 40 thousand Spaniards protest in Madrid against amnesty for Catalan separatists

Tens of thousands of Spaniards protested in Madrid this Sunday against the possibility of Pedro Sánchez granting an amnesty to Catalan separatists, a measure that could help him maintain his position in the Spanish government after losing elections in July.

Supporters of the conservative and opposition Popular Party (PP) came from all over Spain to take part in the demonstration in Madrid. The government estimated that the number of people attending the People’s Party event was 40,000, but the People’s Party claims that the number of people present was 60,000, which would make it “the largest event in the political history” of Spain.

“In Spain, a coup has the right to pardon and amnesty,” said Alberto Nunez Feijoo, quoted by the publication. El Pais.

Government President Pedro Sánchez joked this morning that the Popular Party was “celebrating” in Madrid. “They are demonstrating against the socialist government, but, sorry, it will happen,” he said.

Incumbent Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who came second in July’s elections, could remain in office if he can win the support of ousted former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, whose Fears for Catalonia party controls seven seats in parliament.
