The President of the Foundation, Esa de Queiroz, said this Monday that he is very satisfied with the first decision of the Supreme Administrative Court, which does not prevent the transfer of the writer to the National Pantheon, and expressed confidence in the tribute, completing the process.
Writer Afonso Reis Cabral, president of the Esa de Queiroz Foundation, told Lusa that both he and the “Esa de Queiroz Foundation and the majority of the family”, who agree with the transfer, are “very pleased” that the Supreme Administrative Court (STA) confirmed their the arguments are at this first stage of the process and see “this victory with the same calmness” with which they looked at the precautionary measure, now awaiting the “final decision.”
For Afonso Reis Cabral, the foundation and the “family majority”, what is at stake is “a national moment in memory of Es de Queiroz” without “any artificial contradictions”.
The STA has decided not to take precautions to prevent the transfer of Esa de Queiroz to the National Pantheon, as requested by the writer’s six great-grandchildren last week, confirmed this Monday the deputy Pedro Delgado Alves, responsible for the working group. Lusa Parliament Agency, which was the source of the resolution to pay tribute to the writer.
Pedro Delgado Alves added that the ceremony scheduled for Wednesday has been suspended as the STA’s decision is not final, but will resume later with the closure of the process.
According to the head of the working group, the STA supported this decision by the fact that the majority of the heirs were in favor of the transfer, meaning that the minority who filed the claim had no legitimacy, and stated that the Eça de Queiroz had not left an explicit wish as to whether it wanted to be buried.
According to Afonso Reis Cabral, these arguments are in line with those of the Foundation: “The order confirmed everything that we have always said, and therefore we are very happy with this result.”
The President of the Esa de Queiroz Foundation recalled that “there are still some legal procedures to be completed, but finally, after this order and when the process is finally completed, we will be able, with all joy and tranquility, to organize a national moment of tribute to Esa de Queiroz, which will focus exclusively on Esa de Queiroz, and not on any artificial contradictions.”
Of the 22 great-grandchildren of the author of Os Mayas, 13 agreed to be transferred to the National Pantheon, with three abstaining. The Es de Queiroz Foundation also supports the transfer, as it was the first to take this step so that it could happen.
The resolution to award Esa de Queiroz the National Pantheon Award, proposed by the PS parliamentary group, was approved unanimously in plenary session on January 15, 2021.
To this end, a working group was created, which carried out a number of steps, with the transfer of the remains of Es de Queiroz to the National Pantheon scheduled for September 27 this year.
In an interview with Lusa last week, Afonso Reis Cabral, the great-great-grandson of the writer, said that “the question of the Pantheon is within our duty or within our capabilities as a country, represented naturally by the Assembly of the Republic. pay tribute to Esa de Queiroz, and we have another moment of great tribute and recognition of his life and work. It is so simple”.
