Historical PSD leader and founder Mota Amaral said in an opinion piece published on Tuesday that he does not remember a single national leader of the party standing “on tiptoes” in the Madeira elections.
The former President of the Assembly of the Republic and President of the Government of the Azores, in an opinion article published in three daily newspapers in Ponta Delgada, believes that Alberto João Jardim, former President of the Government of Madeira, “would never have agreed to this.”
“I do not remember that on previous election nights in Funchal, the leaders of national parties, accompanied by other leaders of the same level, stood on tiptoes to appear on television, making political statements about the results and in advance about the regional leaders,” says Mota Amaral.
The PSD history states that “times are different now and we have entered a climate where anything can happen” and it was a “painful and particularly unfortunate moment” for Luis Montenegro.
Mota Amaral, speaking specifically about Sunday’s regional legislative elections in Madeira, believes that the victory of the Social Democrats “had a certain bitterness because they failed to achieve their stated goal of confirming the absolute majority they have in the regional parliament.”
“From what we saw in Madeira, coalitions do not have guaranteed victories, and one could even say that instead of collecting votes, they end up scattering them,” says Mota Amaral, who argues that the electorate “shows signs of preference to separate.” votes and be represented by different parties (…).”
According to the Portuguese politician, “the consequence of this is the formation of an unstable parliamentary majority or with a changing geometry, which turns the four years of government into a period of constant shock with random demands and publicly broken agreements, which is what we have in the autonomous region.” Madeira.”
The former President of the Assembly of the Republic also mentioned the weight of the SDS-PP in the coalition, questioning the specific contribution of the SDS to the election results.
Mota Amaral believes that the dynamics of the exercise of power should have been reflected in the elections, but this did not happen. The General Counting Assembly for the counting of votes in Sunday’s legislative elections in Madeira will be held today until 17:00 at the Sao Lourenço Palace in Funchal.
According to official preliminary results from the General Secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior, the coalition formed by the PSD and SDS-PP won the regional legislative elections in Madeira on Sunday with 43.13% of the votes, but failed to obtain an absolute majority, electing 23 of 47 deputies.
The PS elected 11 deputies, the AKP five and Cega four, while the CDU (PCP/PEV), BE, PAN and IL each elected one deputy. Chega and IL will make their debut in the Madeira Legislative Assembly, while PAN and BE will return to parliament.
